Prof. Adalı was born on 5th of January 1948 in the Eğirdir town of Isparta, and currently lives in Istanbul. He graduated from Pertevniyal high school in 1965 and started to studying at the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ). He graduate from the graduate program in 1971 and started to work as a research assistant at the same Faculty.
He received his PhD degree from İTÜ in 1976, become as associate professor in 1980 and a full professor in 1988. He is founding dean of Computer and Informatics Faculty in 2010 and retired as dean in 2015.
Adalı was visiting research fellow at Case Western University (Cleveland OH) in 1977-78, visiting professor at Carleton University (Ottawa, CA) in 1979 and Akron University (Akron, OH) in 1985.
He has worked at the TUBITAK Marmara Research Center as the founder and head of Informatics Group in 1990-91.
He is working basically in three fields:
- Microprocessor and microprocessor based system design,
- Natural Language Processing ,
- IT System Analysis and Design
He has seven published books : “Microprocessor and Microcomputer”, “Real Time Systems”. “Computer and Data Security and Management”, Informatic Ethics and law”, “NLP for Turkish” , “Frequency Dictionary of Modern Turkish” and “Lake District of Turkey”
He has led and completed several public R&D projects such has:
- CNC Copy Mile,
- Military Surveillance System,
- Milgem,
- 112 Systems for Bursa Police Department
- National Census System
In the late 1980s, he was the public face for computer technologies in Turkey as the academic consultant for public outreach programming on computers produced by the Turkish State Television (TRT)
He was the academic pioneer to form the Department of Computer Engineering (1998) and the Faculty of Computer Engineering and Informatics (2010) of Istanbul Technical University. He was the first and founder dean of the Faculty.
Since 1999, he has been the chairman of the “Computer Engineering Department Heads – (BMBB)” Board. Dr. E. Adalı founded the Academic Informatics Foundation in 2011. He is currently the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
